The United States government passed laws that apply to different classifications of substances used for both medical and non-medical purposes. These classifications are known as “schedules,” under the Controlled Substances Act and there are 4 schedules total which each carry different restrictions on their prescription and use, as well as consequences if caught abusing them. Opioids fall under both schedule 2 and schedule 3 categories as they have a full spectrum of potential for physical and psychological dependence, risk, and abuse. Scheduled 1 substances have been designated as substances which have no current approved use in medicine therapy and are illegal.
